So we’re giving it the fancy treatment as we learn to draw a fancy letter R in just 6 fun and easy steps.
We have a great design and will show you how to draw it quickly and with style. In addition, we would like to leave room for your creativity.
Now that we’ve covered our ideas let’s cover some ways you can bring your creativity into the design. We’ll also touch on some additional ideas you can use to push the design even further. So let’s start with the first step of the guide!
How to Draw A Fancy Letter R
Step 1
In this guide, we’re not just drawing a regular letter R. It will be a fantasy version, which means lots of extra detail.
We will draw the first of these details now, but first, we recommend drawing a rough version of the letter R.
This letter is a bit trickier than others, especially regarding the capitalized version we will create here.
To do this, it is best to write the letter with the lightest pencil in a way that is easy for you.
This isn’t something you have to do, but it will make things a lot easier for you. When you’re done, we can start drawing the first squiggles of the design.
This flourish is in the form of a large spiral that attaches to the upper left side of the letter. There are two options when drawing this spiral.
You could draw everything in one long continuous line. Or you can use two lines running parallel to each other to create the spiral.
As you can see, there is also a pointed tip in the center of the spiral. We can start drawing the letter with this draft in the next step.
Step 2
Next, we’ll draw the rest of the left side of this letter R. We’ll start this step right where you left off in the previous step.
You can draw a small, pointed shape at the top of the letter that connects directly to the top whorl. This small, pointed shape curves slightly to the right.
Next, we draw a vertical line from the top of the spiral to the bottom. It will have a slight curve and gradually curl to the left.
After that, it curls up even more until you have a second spiral in the opposite direction of the previous spiral.
You will also notice that this second spiral is much larger than the first. Try to follow the reference image we present as closely as possible! In the next step, we’re ready to finish the rest of the outline for this letter.
Step 3
As mentioned in Step 2, this next step is about completing the outline of your fancy letter R. A lot happens in this step, so that we will break it down into smaller parts.
Start by drawing a vertical line from the pointed shape at the top of the letter. Next, we draw the “leg” of the letter.
This is drawn with slightly curved lines extending outward and ending in a pointed tip. You can then connect this leg to the bottom spiral you drew earlier.
Then all that remains is to draw the hole in the middle of the letter. This will usually be easy in a regular letter R, but we will make it more unusual here.
This shape has a straight vertical line on the left and a curved line on the right. It’s that simple, and then the pattern is complete!
If you previously drew a guide with a pencil, you can now also delete it since you will no longer need it from this point on.
Step 4
The outline is complete, and we can now draw some detail in and around the letter R. As you can see in the reference image, we started with a spiral line at the top and bottom points of the letter.
You can add more if you like! Next, we added some details to the outline of the letter.
For our version, we filled the inside of the letter with some curvy, wavy lines to give it a more detailed look. Sounds great, but there are many other ways to fill this pattern.
You can choose a different template, fill it with small shapes, or do anything else! This is a step where you can get creative.
You can use our design, a variation, or go for something completely different. So, in the next step, we will add some details around the letter, so let’s move on when you’re done with those details!
Step 5
Now we’re going to add some final little details around the letter. These details are essential, but they can help bring this design to life.
First, we added a few dots to the outer edge of the letter. We’ve kept this minimum, but you can add many more.
Next, we added small teardrop shapes on the outer edges of the letter’s lower left and right spirals.
If you like the look, you can add more to the design.
We finished the letter with some simple line detailing near the outline at various places in the letter.
When it comes to those details, it’s still up to you to decide how many of them you want to include in your design.
You can also change where these details are located or resize them. After playing with these details, you can add some interesting background details.
There’s a lot you can do with wallpaper, and we’ll cover a few possibilities after the next step of the guide.
Step 6
Few things bring a drawing to life more than color, which we will add in this final step of the guide.
Our reference image shows you how to colorize this letter, but it’s one of many possibilities. We chose a deep purple color for the letter, which gives the letter a beautiful look!
